The text sketches a general outline of the use of biblical cycles in the Late Middle Ages in manuscripts made for didactic and devotional purposes. The different types of Bibles produced between the 13th and 14th centuries in France are introduced, from those made for courtly patrons, to those connected with the university. The varied instruments elaborated in order to spread the knowledge of the Bible through images, from the Bibliae Pauperum to the Speculum Humanae Salvationis are analized and connected to the devotional use of biblical images, disseminated in particular through Books of hours.

The term exile frequently used to refer to the age of the Avignon papacy implicitly contains a negative sense, nonetheless it is possible to find positive aspects in the migration of artists and patrons from Europe to the curia based in Southern France and in the dynamics of their relationships. The Avignon context, perceivable as a theatre which was free from the expectations weighing on their places of origin, offered an excellent opportunity to innovate and transgess consolidated traditions. The main artists active in Avignon in the first half of the Trecento are therefore investigated in this perspective.

The study of the illuminations in a manuscript contining an important collection of historical texts allows to localize this volume’s production in Naples and to date it to the decade before the middle of the century. Through an analysis of the different illuminators working on this project it is possible to distinguish an anonymous illuminator, here christened ‘Maestro del Salomone della Casanatense’; the article furthermore draws up the artist’s catalogue, largely connected with the Anjevin court.
